Lexis Hibiscus Port Dickson: The Resort That Set Two Guinness World Records

Before Lexis Hibiscus 2, there was Lexis Hibiscus. Here is what the original resort built, how it opened, and the recognition it has earned since: the clearest preview there is of the resort taking shape next door.

A resort shaped like Malaysia's national flower

Seen from above, the overwater villas of Lexis Hibiscus form the shape of the hibiscus, Malaysia's national flower. The resort sits on Pasir Panjang beach in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan, about an hour's drive from Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

From first guests to official opening, 2015 to 2017

The developer lists Lexis Hibiscus as completed in April 2015, and the resort welcomed its first guests at a soft opening on 1 April 2015, with 100 rooms ready and more opening progressively. Two years later, on 31 July 2017, the resort held its official opening, officiated by the Chief Minister of Negeri Sembilan. By March 2017 it had already welcomed more than 630,000 guests in under two years.

Two Guinness World Records

On 14 October 2016, Guinness World Records verified two titles for Lexis Hibiscus Port Dickson:

  • Most swimming pools in a resort: 643. Guinness counted only pools larger than 1.5 m by 2 m.
  • Most overwater villas at a single resort: 522.

A private pool for every guest

The pool record comes from a simple design decision: every guestroom at Lexis Hibiscus has its own private dip pool and steam room.

Recognised year after year

The resort lists 20 awards and records from 2016 to 2024. They include the World Luxury Hotel Awards in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2023; the Haute Grandeur Global Hotel Awards in 2017, 2018 and 2019; the World Travel Awards in 2019; the Hospitality Asia Platinum Awards in 2018 and 2023–2024; and the ASEAN MICE Venue Standard for 2022–2024.

Who stays at Lexis resorts

Lexis resorts draw a wide mix of guests, and much of it comes from abroad:

  • More than 630,000 guests stayed at Lexis Hibiscus in its first two years (as at March 2017).
  • Lexis Hotel Group properties had welcomed more than 3.6 million tourists from 126 countries, about half of them from overseas (as at August 2017).
  • Kuala Lumpur Metro Group now puts the figure at more than 10 million visitors from 186 countries across its developments (the group's own statement, 2025).

Holidaymakers are only part of the picture. Guests also come for tours, company events, weddings and conferences. Lexis Hibiscus was built with the Hibiscus Grand Ballroom, which seats up to 450 people banquet-style and can be split into four rooms, plus 10 function rooms and a boardroom. The resort lists the ASEAN MICE Venue Standard for 2022–2024 among its awards.

Who developed it and who runs it

Lexis Hibiscus was developed by Kuala Lumpur Metro Group, which was founded in 1996 around its construction arm, YBK Engineering Sdn Bhd, and has since grown into property development and hotel management. What this means for Lexis Hibiscus 2

Lexis Hibiscus 2 is being built right next to the original, by a member of the same group, and will be run by the same hotel operator. It carries the same idea forward: villas laid out over the water in the shape of a hibiscus, each with its own private pool, managed day to day by Lexis Hotel Group. For a buyer, the original resort is the clearest preview there is of what the operator does well: years of guests, two world records, and a resort that is still running and still being recognised today.
